in the Hartley/Vey Studio Theatre at the Shaw Center for the Arts…
The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge presents National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra performing this Thursday as the next Jazz Listening Room event. Eighteen of the hottest players in jazz will take the stage of the Hartley/Vey Studio Theatre from 7:30 pm—and you won’t want to miss it!
Delfeayo Marsalis is one of the top trombonists, composers and producers in jazz today. Known for his technical excellence, he is one of the most imaginative and musical of the trombonists of his generation. In January 2011, Delfeayo and the Marsalis family (father Ellis and brothers Branford, Wynton and Jason) earned the nation’s highest jazz honor – a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award. For this Baton rouge appearance, Marsalis will be joined by a cadre of expert musicians as his Uptown Jazz Orchestra.
Together, they will be performing blues and standards that combine riff-playing, spontaneous arrangements and the New Orleans 2nd-line groove that keeps old school jazz traditions alive and expands the reach of Louisiana-made music in the 21st century.
“For this year’s Jazz Listening Room, we set out to program the best regional musicians and jazz-players we could find,” says Eric Holowacz, President and CEO of the Arts Council. “Thursday’s gig might just be the hottest, most powerful combination of music-makers we’ve ever had in one room. It’s not to be missed!”
The Jazz Listening Room is a four-part series presented by the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge and the River City Jazz Coalition. Seating is limited and advance tickets can be reserved for $10 at the Manship Theatre ticket desk, (225) 344-0334
or online at www.manshiptheatre.org
