BATON ROUGE – More than 400 middle- and high-school students participated in the 2014 Region VII Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair. Students filled the LSU Student Union Royal Cotillion Ballroom with their projects on Feb. 24-26 to compete for category honors and special awards.
The overall winners in the senior division, grades 9-12, were Marianne Konikoff and David Luo. Konikoff was awarded first place for her physics and astronomy project, “Quantitative Spectral Classification of R. Coronae Borealis Stars.” Luo placed second for his mathematical sciences project, “Mysteries of the Euclidean Algorithm Revealed: With Applications.” Konikoff is a student at St. Joseph’s Academy and Luo attends Baton Rouge Magnet High School.
This is the second year in a row Konikoff has won first place overall for Region VII. Both Konikoff and Luo will represent Region VII at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, or ISEF, in Los Angeles in May. This will be Konikoff’s fourth selection and Luo’s second to attend this prestigious international event.
