ExxonMobil Donates $450,000 to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math School Programs

On April 5, ExxonMobil Baton Rouge announced it will donate $450,000 to school programs in North Baton Rouge, emphasizing support of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education in particular. The grants were announced at an event held at Scotlandville Magnet High School, where ExxonMobil volunteers worked with students to design small rollercoasters.

The Louisiana State University Cain Center for STEM Literacy will receive $225,000 of the total donation over three years to help train 21 teachers at Scotlandville Magnet High School, Scotlandville Middle School and Progress Elementary School.

Teachers will get “on-the-job coaching” with the Cain Center staff planning to observe classrooms and review videotapes of teaching. Local schools also will receive supplies for robotics programs, iPads with math and science applications and other tools, according to ExxonMobil.

Another $180,000 over three years will go to New Schools for Baton Rouge, the nonprofit private-public partnership that works to attract charter schools to the area.

The rest of the funds, $45,000 over three years, will go to the South Louisiana Chapter of Teach For America to help attract and retain math and science teachers in North Baton Rouge schools. The organization is receiving a total of $125,000 from ExxonMobil this year.
